PUB PAVILION

An immersive take on the local watering hole.

The Pub Pavilion is one of two pavilions constructed by Synecdoche for the 2016 POP-X exhibition in downtown Ann Arbor, MI. In collaboration with local watering hole, The Alley Bar, the Pub Pavilion uses simple blue objects to create depth in an immersive under-water interior.

An aggregate of a simple affordable object works best to create an impact with an interesting visual field. The interior of the pavilion smooths out the geometric condition of the exterior by molding forms of foam into a lofted undulating surface.

Alley Bar’s brick and mortar location serves classic drinks, cocktails and beer, one of which is Pabst Blue Ribbon beer. An inserted array of blue marking flags abstractly ties together Pabst Blue "Ribbon" with a room of blue ribbon flags. The 360 degree surface treatment provides an intense dash of color for the art festival.

The Pub Pavilion’s ocean-like interior as a metaphorical watering hole pairs with the narrative of its partner installation, The Water Pavilion.
