MAD SCIENTIST TABLE
A concoction of copper and wood.
Synecdoche fabricated a set of four convertible café tables in collaboration with Rapt Studio for an office in San Francisco. Playing with the idea of the "mad scientist," Synecdoche infused walnut planks with copper leafing to curate a new material compound.
Embedding
Working with the wrong side of the wood, copper sheets are infused into the natural knots and cracks of the laminated walnut planks.
Bonding
Epoxy is poured over the copper/walnut connections to initiate a chemical bond between the two materials.
Fusing
With the careful work of a paintbrush, the copper is permanently fused with the wood.
The experiment results in a mineralized wooden material marbled with copper. The tables are attached to steel frames with wheels to become convertible and flexible objects.
